Counterpoint (since 2013) is a Drum & Bass label and collective from Porto, Portugal. Our focus on the deep sound has led us to develop an introspective and intimate approach to the sound of Drum & Bass, and all 160+ BPM Bass Music.

Last August, we mentioned Laurens Vanbrabant (Lavance) as “one of the most serious contenders for breakthrough artist of the year”. His single – Suspect/Glaucus through Counter X Culture (CXC) was a huge success, and proved our predictions correct. He now returns to the label as the first artist to graduate from our up & coming release series – CXC - to our official main output.

His array of styles, flexible creative mind, and relentless work ethic is in full display throughout his new Totem EP. Travelling through styles, while ignoring conventions, he worked through the past year to deliver four tracks which display the full range of his sound. And this hasn’t been a one-man job, as the EP features collaborations with two artist who have been delivering some great music in the last couple of months – Scepticz and Klinical.

Totem has all the ingredients to be one of our standout releases of the year, having all being inflicting damage on dancefloors worldwide.

Lavance – Totem

The EP starts off with the title track – “Totem”. Picking up exactly where Glaucus left off, Lavance enters into exploratory territory yet again, with another bold track. Drifting aside from conventions, it mixes and blends styles and techniques, which result in an avant-gard percurssion madness, which performs outside all norms. As it progresses into the second half, it starts to deconstruct into more minimal territory, and showcasing a rolling razor-sharp production. Lavance & Klinical - Crush

All alarm systems will go off, as Lavance & Klinical trigger the “roller” alert! Crush is a straight arrow at the dancefloor, which could also be a doctor prescribed stimulant. If you’re having trouble getting out of the bed in the morning, this is bound to do the trick, as the British sensation Klinical brings a current UK rolling vibe to the release. A true sonic slap which we invite you to try it immediately.

Lavance - Continuum

Welcome to the deeper and darker side of the EP, as the sinister ambiance of the intro paints a very clear picture for the upcoming relentless dark and moody vibes of the track. Ready to resonate on any surface, the whole progression transmits an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue, which are mixed in a dark energy pool to build an involving shamanic rhythm.

Lavance & Scepticz - Mercury

The release closes off on a more musical but not less breathtaking note, as Lavance invites Scepticz for a jungle influenced track, perfectly fitting for both relaxing at home, and stepping in the club. The melodic and smooth intro disguise what is about to come - a hard hitting kick, filled ferocious breaks and wobbling bassline. A deadly combination that will peel the eyes, and ears, of devoted junglists. As it progresses, it eases us into the end of the EP through the introduction of a dreamy soundscape which fulfill both body and soul.
